Following a mastectomy procedure, women will often look to restore their appearance through a breast reconstruction procedure. While most are ultimately happy with their results, many others find themselves less than satisfied. New York plastic surgeon, Dr. Nolan Karp, reports on this issue, explaining the revision options for women in this situation.
“For mastectomy patients, breast reconstruction can be a life-changing procedure,” explains Dr. Karp. “Unfortunately, however, some institutions simply don’t deliver the level of care that most women need.” Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring a natural-looking breast using implants or a patient’s own tissue.
“Thankfully, for those dissatisfied with their results, a breast reconstruction revision is often possible,” reports Dr. Karp. “We’re seeing more and more women exploring this option at our practice.”
Asked to explain the goals of a revision procedure, Dr. Karp offered this: “Revision surgery hinges completely on a woman’s unique medical needs and cosmetic goals,” explains Dr. Karp. “From poorly positioned implants to asymmetrical breasts to unsightly scarring, we treat each patient as an individual and create a treatment plan suited to her specific concerns.”
Dr. Karp – along with his colleague Dr. Mihye Choi – are known in the industry for championing state-of-the-art breast reconstruction techniques. Their practice, KCNY plastic surgery, offers the latest in nipple-sparing mastectomies and DIEP flap reconstruction.
Highlighting the importance of patients understanding all their options, Dr. Karp concluded with this: “If a patient is not happy with her previous surgeon’s work, she needs to understand that help is still available. Our practice is committed to serving these women, bringing them closer to the results they were hoping for from the start.”
